Greek Salad Recipe

How to make Greek Salad

The Greek salad dressing recipe is really easy to make and finishes the salad off nicely.

Greek salad ingredients

  • ripe tomatoes
  • cucumber
  • onions
  • green bell pepper - always green peppers and never any other colour
  • Greek feta

The base ingredients of tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers and onions are usually cut into large slices or chunks and served in a bowl with blocks of feta (never crumbled feta) on top.

Olives are optional and don't appear in all Greek salads, never add lettuce!

A quick word on cucumbers!

Of course, here in the UK, English cucumbers are the norm, but I believe in the US they are known as Hot House cucumbers.

Here in the UK cucumbers bought in supermarkets are always wrapped in plastic film.

Cucumbers dehydrate quickly and are vulnerable to damage during their journey. So the plastic film acts as a second skin and extends their shelf-life by almost a full week.

The skins are much thinner than those of cucumbers abroad, in fact, I really don't like the thick skinned cucumbers you get abroad.

With that said although most cucumbers in the UK are grown here a lot come from Spain, so I've no idea why it is that when you go to Spain their cucumbers are tough, it's all very odd if you ask me!

Dressing for Greek salad

  • 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
  • a squeeze of lemon juice
  • sea salt and black pepper

In a small bowl, mix together good extra virgin olive oil, red wine vinegar, oregano (the key ingredient) and a pinch of sea salt to make the flavours pop!

Some recipes add minced garlic and Dijon mustard, but I've been to Greece many times and eaten more Greek salads than you can shake a stick at and I have never come across a Greek salad dressing with those ingredients. 😐

Greek salad.

Top Tip!

You can of course just drizzle your salad with extra virgin olive oil and miss out the other ingredients, but you MUST add oregano - it's the law! No Greek salad would be complete without it.
