Can these be baked in the oven?
You can, but they really won't be as good. Frying the prawn toast ensures a lovely golden crunch.
For those that are a little more health-conscious, if you did want to bake them, make up the prawn toast and brush the bottom bread side with a little oil.
Pop them onto a non-stick baking tray and bake at 240°C/475°F for 10 minutes, turning once halfway through cooking.
How to Make Prawn Toast
Get the bread out of the packet and leave unwrapped to dry it out a bit - 10 minutes should do the trick.Either very finely chop everything, or put the lot into a small food processor and whizz it up - far quicker and easier!
Remove the crusts from the bread and cut them into triangles - no need to remove the crusts.
Spread the prawn paste mixture onto the pieces of bread - you want it about 5 mm thick.
Sprinkle the toasts with the sesame seeds.
Heat enough vegetable oil in a large frying pan to shallow fry the toasts - if you’re doubling this recipe then you’re probably best to use a deep-fat fryer.
Fry four prawn toasts at a time, paste-side down, for 2 to 3 minutes, then carefully turn them over and fry for another minute or so until they are golden brown.
Remove with a slotted spoon, drain on kitchen paper and serve straight away with sweet chilli dipping sauce, or sweet and sour sauce.
