Tandoori chicken skewers are so easy to make, especially with only two ingredients needed for the tandoori marinade. Cooking doesn't get any more simple than this my friends!
The recipe for tandoori kebabs or skewers, is pretty much a cheat recipe since the marinade is ready-made but it certainly doesn't lack in flavour.
Well-spiced, tender and truly delicious. You can make smaller kebabs as a perfect starter for any Indian meal. We love a good fakeaway in this house! Far healthier and cheaper too.
How to cook in the Ninja Health Grill
You can cook either on a BBQ, pan-fry or under a hot grill, whichever suits you best. I used my Ninja Health Grill and Air Fryer - it really is the bee's knees of indoor health grills.
To cook kebabs, all you do is drizzle your kebabs with a little vegetable oil and set the grill to High, it will Preheat for 8 minutes. Then you will see Add Food on the screen.
Open the lid, add the kebabs and shut the lid. Cooking will begin and cook for 5 minutes. Turn and carry on cooking for approx. 3 minutes. The exact time will depend on the size you cut your chicken.
However you cook them, I seriously recommend using a Thermapen digital food thermometer.
Ingredients
- Chicken fillets
- Pataka's tandoori spice marinade
- Greek natural yoghurt
- Red and green bell peppers
- Red onions
Patak's Tandoori Spice Marinade can be found in any good supermarket here in the UK for around £2.20 a jar or you'll find it over on Amazon - just be sure not to pay too much for it.
I've seen it over on Amazon (com) but it does seem expensive, so the best thing, I'd say, is to buy any good brand of Tandoori Marinade.
Patak's brand is of very thick consistency, which is a good thing because you need to mix it with a little yoghurt. Marinading chicken in Greek natural yoghurt makes the chicken really tender.
What to serve with chicken skewers
Keep it simple - pitta bread and a side salad is all that's needed.
Tandoori chicken marinade
I always use FAGE Total Greek Yoghurt 5% fat. The zero % fat tends to split when used in cooking.
Yoghurt tenderise meat much more gently and effectively than regular marinades.
Acidic vinegar or citrus-based marinades will toughen proteins like chicken breast and turn them into a hard and rubbery and horrid consistency, yoghurt slowly tenderises and results in meat that can practically be pulled apart by hand.
What is a tandoor?
A tandoor also known as tannour is a cylindrical clay or metal oven used in cooking and baking.
A tandoor heats up to a really high temperature and would certainly produce better-looking tandoori skewers than mine, but obviously, they are not an option for the home cook!
What is tandoori spice mix?
The specific spices of the tandoori spice mix vary from one region to another but typically include garam masala, garlic, ginger, onion, cayenne pepper, and sometimes other spices. The spices are often ground together with a pestle and mortar.
You can use metal or wooden skewers but you must soak wooden skewers in water for at least 30 minutes if cooking on a BBQ or grill otherwise they will burn.
I find that metal skewers are far easier to thread meat, poultry and vegetables than wooden ones.

Tandoori Chicken Skewers Recipe
Ingredients
- 3 tablespoons Greek yoghurt

- 1 green bell pepper - sliced into big bite-sized pieces
Instructions
- Cut the chicken into big bite-sized pieces and put them into a small bowl.

- Leave to marinate for an hour.
- Prepare the rest of the ingredients, cover with cling film and set them aside.
- Thread the chicken, peppers and onion onto the skewers.
- Grill for 8-10 minutes or BBQ (turning once halfway through).
- Be sure to check they are fully cooked before serving.
- Drizzle your kebabs with a little vegetable oil and set the grill to High, it will Preheat for 8 minutes.
- When you see Add Food on the screen, open the lid, add the kebabs and shut the lid. Cooking will begin. Cook for 5 minutes.
- Turn and carry on cooking for approx. 3 minutes. The exact time will depend on the size you cut your chicken.
- However you cook them, I seriously recommend using a Thermapen digital food thermometer.
