Healthier Baked Yogurt Bouyiourdi

Baked Yogurt

A savoury baked yogurt recipe low in calories and low in fat. My version of the well-known Greek dish bouyiourdi.

Yogurt is a fantastic versatile, convenient and great food staple suitable for the whole family.

Containing a range of nutrients important in a balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle yoghurt is an amazing food product.

Because I happen to know that when baked, Greek yogurt actually ends up similar to baked feta - just not as salty but it still tastes good.

Although to be honest, I'd much prefer the real deal, baked feta and tomatoes made with FETA 😋 But if you're calorie counting, this is still worth making.

If you've ever been to Greece chances are you will have come across it.

So, back in 2014, I was asked to make a recipe with Greek yogurt and the first thought that came to mind was the much-loved Greek dish bouyiourdi a meze dish which is, in my opinion, totally addictive 😋

Bouyiourdi ingredients usually consist of the following

Feta, tomatoes, peppers, onions, garlic and chilli sprinkled with oregano.

Ingredients in my baked yogurt recipe

  • olive oil
  • 2 medium-sized red onions - very thinly sliced
  • 2 ripe tomatoes - thinly sliced
  • 1 x jar of roasted peppers in oil - well drained
  • 3 fat cloves of garlic - peeled and very finely chopped
  • 1 long green chilli pepper - medium heat, deseeded and thinly sliced
  • dried red chilli flakes
  • sea salt
  • dried oregano
Making bouyiourdi.

Well, there's no feta cheese in this version but it is far lower in calories and fat because yogurt replaces the feta.

Yes, indeed you can bake Greek yogurt!

Recipe Top Tips!

  • Greek yogurt is the best. I use the brand name TOTAL Greek yogurt 5% as it doesn't split when added to cooking, the 0% version may well split so I'd avoid it.
  • Be sure to use roasted peppers in oil and not in vinegar.
  • Make sure you slice your onions thinly otherwise, they won't cook.
  • You can most definitely make this recipe to suit. If you love tomatoes add more. The amount of feta and veggies you use is up to you, just note you might need to adjust the cooking time.

What to serve with bouyiourdi

Fresh crusty bread for dipping and mopping or you can use pitta bread is all else that's needed if you are serving as a starter (mezze). Oh, and a glass of wine or ouzo.
