Microwave and Steam Oven Recipe
Potato bake or gratin is really easy to make. I've had my Panasonic Steam Combination Oven for a few weeks now, and I've been busy experimenting with the steam function.
Of course, it's not necessary to have a steam oven to make this recipe - you could par-boil the potatoes and cook them in a regular oven.
But the Panasonic Steam Oven really does make life easier as everything is done in the one oven, so there's far less washing up, which can only be a good thing!

My gratin of cheesy topped potatoes and peppers is tasty enough on its own or served as a side dish.
Ingredients in this recipe
- 350g baby potatoes - skin on and sliced 1cm thickness
- Char-grilled peppers taken from a jar - drained of oil and sliced
- a few baby plum tomatoes - halved
- a pinch of dried thyme
- sea salt to taste
- olive oil
- Parmesan - freshly grated
- chopped flat leaf parsley - optional

Potato Gratin with Cheese and Peppers
Ingredients
- 350g baby potatoes - skin on and sliced 1cm thickness
- Char-grilled peppers taken from a jar - drained of oil and sliced
- a few baby plum tomatoes - halved
- a pinch of dried thyme
- sea salt to taste
- Olive oil
- Parmesan - freshly grated
- chopped flat leaf parsley - optional
Instructions
- Fill the water tank with water and replace it back in the oven.
- Layer the potatoes directly onto the plastic trivet. Put the plastic trivet onto the glass shelf in the middle shelf position. Select program number 4.
- Touch microwave turbo assist (turbo cook) once. Enter the weight of the vegetables and touch START.
- Once the program has finished, remove the potatoes from the oven, and check, they should be perfectly cooked through. Give the oven a quick wipe since it will be a bit wet from the steam.
- Add a single layer of potatoes to an oven-proof dish and season with a little sea salt. Now do a layer of peppers and tomatoes along with a sprinkling of thyme. Repeat with the rest of the ingredients.
- Sprinkle over the grated Parmesan and a drizzle of oil.
- Cover the potatoes with foil (I recommend Bacofoil non-stick foil)
- Tap Convection until the temperature reads 200°c and press START a 'P' will appear showing while the oven is preheating.
- When the oven has preheated it will beep and the 'P' will flash. Open the door and pop the dish onto the wire shelf in the middle position.
- Set the cooking time to 20 minutes after that time the potatoes should now be heated through.
- Remove the foil and set the oven to GRILL 2 (medium grill level) for just 2 minutes so the top begins to colour.
- Sprinkle with a little chopped flat leaf parsley and serve while piping hot.
Oh Jan, cheesy potatoes are my ultimate weakness. I think I practically lived on them when I was a student haha.

ReplyDeleteSo curious to try and cook with a steam oven. I went to a press event for another brand's steam ovens but rather than show us the ovens, or explain how they work, theye just got in a posh chef, asked him to create a meal showing off the ovens and we were sat down to eat it! Nice enough meal but couldn't figure out the relevance of the steam oven to half the dishes! And still none of the wiser about that brand's steam ovens! Shall investigate this Panasonic option!
